FIRE TIM BECK

Beck's Offense Enters Airplane Mode

Eight third-quarter plays. Zero points. Apparently the halftime adjustment was to disconnect.

For a quarter, Tim Beck's offense looked like it had finally located the football game. Two touchdowns. A deep ball. Actual reasons to stay on the couch that didn't involve being too angry to stand up.

Then came halftime, and apparently somebody clicked “remind me later” on the rest of the offense.

South Florida lost 31–24 at UTSA on October 8. The Bulls are 4–2 overall and 1–2 in the American. That lovely 4–0 start now feels like the free trial before the billing problems begin.

The third quarter had a guest appearance by the offense

South Florida led 17–10 at halftime and trailed 20–17 when the fourth quarter began. Eight offensive plays in between. You can run more plays arguing over which button opens the streaming app.

Brian Hartline noticed. After the game, he said:

“I think that the offense didn't do a very good job at all of staying on the field during the third quarter.”

Hartline's postgame comments, reported October 9

That's a remarkably polite way to describe an offense treating the second half like an optional seminar. Beck's unit managed 177 passing yards for the entire night. Michael Van Buren wasn't sacked and didn't throw an interception. This particular disappearing act cannot be explained away with a pile of sacks or quarterback giveaways.

A coordinator's job includes keeping an offense useful after the opponent has seen the opening plan. South Florida fans shouldn't need a search party to find the next first down.

Congratulations on the process. Where are the points?

At his Tuesday news conference, reported by South Florida Athletics on October 14, Hartline said:

“We are not result-based. We are process-based.”

Wonderful. Could somebody put the process on the scoreboard? The scoreboard remains stubbornly interested in points.

Hartline also said:

“Any arguing (or) justification for the outcome is just a loser mentality.”

Tuesday press-conference reporting

Apply that standard to Beck's offense. Stop grading it on how much better it looked than its own worst afternoon. Being less painful than Temple is a spectacularly cheap trophy.

Hartline's actual assessment split responsibility: the offense let the team down against Temple, while the defense did so at UTSA. These were comments about the units, not an announcement that Beck had been fired or stripped of play-calling. Hartline owns the staffing decisions. He also owns the decision to keep asking fans for patience.

The touchdown arrived. So did another problem.

Van Buren's 11-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Crowther finished a 12-play, 75-yard drive and put South Florida ahead 24–23 with 1:56 left. UTSA answered with its own 75-yard touchdown drive, scoring with 15 seconds remaining.

Hartline's assessment included this:

“We kind of scored too quick there, honestly.”

He also said:

“It was a good call and I'm glad we went to it.”

Official postgame follow-up, published October 12

South Florida has reached the stage where finally scoring creates a scheduling complaint. After the third-quarter drought, fans could be forgiven for wanting to accept the touchdown before someone asked for a receipt.

The defense surrendered 277 rushing yards. That collapse belongs to the defense. It doesn't turn Beck's eight-play third quarter into clever strategy. Both units can make a mess on the same evening; there is no rule requiring them to take turns.

The comment section has seen enough

In the Reddit postgame thread, u/DENTINGBADGE319 wrote:

“That was a football game. You can't be that bad in the 3rd quarter and not expect it to bite you.”

u/Due_Bluebird3562 offered a shorter hiring review:

“No good coach hires Tim Beck.”

Those are fan opinions, not inside information. Other commenters saw improvement. Fine. A better opening quarter is worth noticing. It isn't a permission slip to spend the third quarter watching UTSA work.

Kent State is not a performance review loophole

Next comes Kent State at home, Saturday, October 17 at 7 p.m. Eastern on ESPN+. The Golden Flashes enter 2–4. Beck gets another chance to produce an offense that lasts longer than the opening act.

If South Florida piles up points, enjoy them. Then ask whether the same plan can survive the conference schedule. We already watched a big Delaware State score followed by 14 points against Bowling Green and 13 against Temple.

Hartline should use the coming bye to examine Beck's role, including who calls the plays. Six games is enough to ask for more than occasional signs of life. If the offense needs a weekly press conference to explain why it stopped working, perhaps the next adjustment should involve the person running it.

Saturday's kickoff is confirmed. Beck's offense attending all four quarters remains the question.
